I've watched this video r e l i g i o u s l y lol
Some things I've noticed are, the EXACT same paintings and newspapers are seen throughout the entire video. This may have just been something the animator(s) did, to save time/effort, but I THINK NOT! I also noticed the paintings don't have any eyes (Reference to the faceless crowds?) and they're all in the style of portrait paintings from the 18-19th century.
The newspapers are copies of the London Daily Post, titled "Two More Victims Claimed by the East End Ripper", an issue from September 18, 1888 (you can google London Daily with that date and it shows up, matching exactly the ones in the video); so we now have a time frame for when The Bastards is set. That does make me wonder, though, how is Andy Warhol involved, cuz he wasn't around until mid-1900s.
Anyway, the particular newspaper Andrew is holding is missing letters, suggesting it's been re-read quite a few times/is an old paper. However the copies seen throughout the video seem to also be missing letters, making me think the latter is more probable. We also know from the paper, obviously, that London and England exist in this world.
Now I'd like to go through the video more frame-by-frame. First off we see a mailbox numbered of course 747, and Rem walking towards the Manor in the rain, with a very apocalyptic/halloween-like vibe, with all the bats and dead trees. Even the grass is dead. What happened here? Was it gassed, and the gas kills the environment?
At 0:15 we get a good look at the Manor; in Emerson's artwork, of course, it's much larger and more intricate, and in the video it has what appear to be lightning rods on the roof, which are not present in the art. In the video it seems to have three floors, and an attic above the third. There's a front porch, and all of the window shutters are open which seems odd considering it's raining.
Then we see what I'm assuming is the lead rat, on a rock or something outside the manor.
As soon as the singing starts, the view moves to inside the Manor, maybe implying that the lyrics give us a closer look. The manor looks a lot bigger on the inside (Doctor Who vibes lol) and certainly taller; but that's probably just a perspective issue.
The elephant in the room is probably the enormous hole in the ceiling, with what looks like scaffolding above/outside in an attempt to repair it. What caused the hole? This seems to strengthen the earlier theory that the Manor was gassed/attacked. It's also RAINING and Seb, Daniel, and Andrew are all sitting directly under the hole not seeming to notice. We get a quick view of the wall, where you can see the same paintings several times, in particular one of an army general person with a blue coat. You can also see some lamps, a wall flag/hanging tapestry of the Palaye logo next to one of Warhol Stars. There's also the first clock you can see, and none of the clocks in the video have hands, making them useless for telling time I guess. What happened to the clocks? and wHY?
Andrew is reading the paper, Sebastian is sitting on the couch with his feet on the table, and Daniel is sitting on the arm of the couch; they're both drinking tea (it LOOKS like coffee but they don't drink coffee so...).
Rem opens the door, and Seb looks shocked. Andrew puts down the paper and is also shocked or startled; we don't see Daniel's reaction though. Did they think he died? Was he lost somewhere and made it back to the Manor? Maybe he tried to prevent whatever attack happened on it, failed, and came back.
Seb and Daniel continue their tea-drinking, and Rem says something short, probably "Hi" or "Hello". Seb gives him his tea, Rem stares at it thoughtfully or in disgust drinking it. We have views of Rem in the window with a mic, and Andrew in the window with a guitar, both looking out watching for something?
Rem drinks more tea, then turns and notices a rat, probably the one seen earlier. He's startled, like probably anyone would be, and watches as the rat runs upstairs. He finishes the tea with a glare at the stairs and throws the teacup on the floor/couch (we can't quite see). Seb and Daniel watch the cup fall nonchalantly. Rem heads up the stairs.
We get a shot of Em in the window with a kick drum, not looking out watching like the others, but facing in; then Rem apparently praying. This could just be to go with the line, "running out of faith", but there may be slightly more to it; maybe he tried to pray that whatever attack happened wouldn't happen, but it did, so he's run out of faith...
Rem goes up the stairs, while the other three watch. We didn't see any of their reactions to the rat, I'd like to note.
Rem gets to what I'm assuming is the second floor, and heads down the hallway, which has two windows, two newspapers on the floor, and lots of painting copies. There appear to be three doorways to rooms up there. One of them is closed, and Rem walks by it, looking around at the walls and ceiling. Surveying damage? Looking for the rat? Looking for Emerson (on the ceiling? why not)?
It cuts to a shot of Rem looking at his reflection, to go with the line "I don't even like you" implying that he hates himself or failed in some way.
We cut back to him walking down the hallway - not actually him, but his shadows. There's two shadows because it either replays (we see a lot of that in the video - replaying a certain clip a couple times) or the two windows cast two different shadows. We get a good look at the portraits and you can see that they repeat.
Cut to Seb's turn in the window; he's looking out and up, watching, with his guitar.
Back to Rem walking down the hallway, past two doorways, both of which are closed. He stops and looks in the third, which is wide open, and Em is on the couch sleeping (typical Emerson lol) with his hat over his face. His left arm is stretched out onto the table, his hand next to a tea cup. The chairs are covered, there's a Lieseil tapestry, a stuffed tuna(??), a grandfather clock ( a copy of some of the earlier ones seen), lots of books, and more paintings. Maybe Em fell asleep reading?
Rem stands there and grins, maybe planning to prank him or startle him, which hardly seems appropriate for the situation of a ruined raining house but whatever, Remington is Remington XD Then the lightning flashes, and illuminates a Blackwell keys tattoo? on Em's wrist. Rem looks shocked, horrified even. He clearly knows what the symbol means. Emerson must have kept it hidden under his sleeve before now, until he got careless and fell asleep. What is Rem's experience with the Blackwell symbol? It's present in Emerson's logos in his art, and stuff, so it seems to be something positive, like 747, love the void, etc. It might be that Rem knows what it is, and they're not supposed to know what it is, like it's something dangerous to be involved with. And Em has a tattoo of it!
The rat from before (probably) jumps up suddenly, onto the books on the table, waking up Emerson, who jerks away startled, and Rem tries to hit/shoo the rat away. It hisses in defiance, jumps to the floor and rallies a ton of other rats behind it. Another newspaper copy is on the floor. Was there a copy for each of them?
Rem and Em jump up and back away, probably unsure what to do. Are the rats, like, rabid, or weaponized somehow? Clearly they're not supposed to be here, and were maybe sent in after whatever attack has maybe happened?
Rem and Em run out into the hallway. (See? Why run from ordinary rats? They're still just rats...or are they?) They run down the hallway, looking side to side for something? Which is a bit odd, considering when you run down a hallway you would normally look straight ahead. What are they looking for? more rats?
They come down the stairs to the other three.
And finally, we get Daniel's shot in the window, holding his bass over his shoulder, looking out, watching, like the others.
Em and Rem join in a sort of circle with the others, and Emerson looks really worried or contrite. Does he know Rem saw his wrist? Is he worried Rem will tell the others?
Before Rem or Em can say anything, it looks like Seb says "Look" and they all turn around to see the rat horde on the stairs, looking down menacingly, then start chewing on the railing/walls, and the whole Manor begins to shake. There's probably more chewing going on all over the Manor, because just bringing down a stairway would not cause the whole thing to shake. We see the lead rat again (probably). The five of them stand in a circle facing out, looking around at the rats.
Emerson bends down, lifts the rug, and reveals a hidden compartment/bomb shelter? Maybe they hid here when the attack happened, with the gas masks. Or did they? It seems sort of like the others had no idea this was here. Emerson jumps down and presents the others with the masks.
They put them on and start playing music I guess (these shots were seen all throughout the video) with lightning and red and blue flashes, and what looks like either simply smoke effect of them playing OR more gas! Was the shaking just from the rats, or was there another attack happening? The gas masks and playing music seem to help them control the lightning? which is probably channeled through the lightning rods seen earlier. The lighting actually hits and plays all around the five, and you can see it striking Rem's hand, but they are unharmed, unlike the rats who are susceptible to the lightning, and look pretty agonized as they get shocked. They flee.
The end of the video is them all on the roof - Daniel sitting crosslegged on the left side, Rem standing, Seb sitting rather nonchalantly, Em leaning against the now stable Manor and Andrew next to him. They certainly don't seem to mind getting soaked by the rain.
It LOOKS like the Manor is full of gas, and they're out on the roof, waiting for it to dissipate, after the attack is over. The bats fly around and we get another look at the lightning rods. Are the bats a positive or a negative element? They seem pretty neutral, actually, not really doing anything.
AAAANNNND That's my full breakdown of the Little Bastards Music Video, I hope you enjoyed, sorry it was so long, but hopefully I have you intrigued and wondering and wanting to re-watch the video. My twitter is @mordyny_ if you want to talk to me about this breakdown!
